Ben Hudson, 15, of Hardy recently completed his Eagle
Scout Leadership Service Project, a key step in earning
Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting
program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).
Hudson planned, organized and managed the construction
and installation of a shade arbor adjacent to the playground
and track at Burnt Chimney Elementary in Wirtz.
“I enjoyed being a student there and really wanted to find
a way to give something back to the school and the faculty,”
said Hudson, a sophomore at Franklin County High School.
“The principal at Burnt Chimney has said how great the
arbor looks and that teachers are already enjoying it.”
Hudson, a member of Troop 130, which is chartered
through Epworth United Methodist Church in Moneta,
has been involved in scouting for more than nine years and
holds the rank of Life Scout. He said Capps Home Building
Center donated a good portion of the lumber needed for his
project and family and friends donated funds to help cover
other costs. Nine scouts and three adult leaders helped him
construct the arbor in October.
“I was really proud of all the scouts and leaders who turned
out to help me construct something I designed – especially
since the weather was not very cooperative. Fellowship is
a big part of scouting and something I really enjoy,” said
Hudson, the son of Breck and Stephanie Hudson, who
hopes to finish the requirements for Eagle Scout in the
next few months.
