In spite of the incredible outpouring
of high level support, we still have
a long way to go., the Long Beach
Boardwalk is being rebuilt, to the tune
of 44.2 million dollars, with most of
the cost covered by FEMA. In July
2012, a four block section re-opened,
spanning between Long Beach Road
and Magnolia Blvd. This is the center
of town, where many of the tourists
come from NYC to go to the beach.
The boardwalk construction is solid,
with hardwood that’s estimated to last
about 40 years. The city added in a
sea wall to help keep the flooding in
that area to a minimum.
“It feels good, normal”, my friend
Steven said to me the other day. “It
feels like we are almost there.”
Steven had taken water into his
house in Island Park, lost a car, and
had a few boats float up on his front
yard. He is a jeweler in Long Beach,
and his store had also been flooded.
This double blow, damage to the
house and the inability to open for
business, was not unusual. Sandy had
impacted everyone in this community
in so many ways. Slowly but surely,
Steven did open for the start of the
holiday season, working seven days a
week from just before Thanksgiving up
until Christmas.
The Army Corps of Engineers and
the City of Long Beach are working
together on a plan to build up the
beaches and the bay to prevent
flooding disasters in the future. In
2006, the same idea had been voted
down by the City Council. I was among
many residents who didn’t agree
with that decision, and as a result we
suffered with Sandy.
The details of this plan are not
released yet – it will be very interesting
to see what is on the drawing board.
As of today, we remain unprotected
from another large storm. Every time
a storm is predicted, the city trucks
in sand from the beach to make fake
dunes to prevent flooding. Naturally,
we all become nervous with every
forecast of inclement weather. That
seems to be the stuff of things for
the foreseeable future. Living thru a
disaster such as Sandy necessarily
changes the way one looks at things.
It’s not just a foreign land or distant
state with a 5 minute disaster story on
the news. It impacts all of our lives on
a daily basis.
With summer in full swing, the
beaches are once again packed, and
parking is a valuable commodity. As in
the years before, people still wander
mindlessly into the street, looking up
at the sky while crossing the street,
which makes it challenging for us
residents and those who are driving!
Kids are in the playgrounds again,
families are on the beach and surfers
dot the shoreline. In the early morning,
dog walkers are out on the sandy
shoreline, trying to give their pooches
exercise while avoiding encounters
with the Long Beach Police Dept. It’s
not over by a long shot, but we have
hope. We shall have renewal.
