bulb fixtures. If you turn two of them on, the lamps

will warm up. After a few minutes, they will be hot

to the touch. Now if you turn one off, you can go

up into the attic. Once there, you will see one lamp

lit, which is controlled by the switch that is still on.

If you touch the other two, one will be warm, and

the other will be cool to the touch. The former is

controlled by the switch that was turned on and

now is off. The latter is controlled by the switch

          that was never turned on.

            Lights in the Attic

Your eccentric old uncle has died and left you his house, providing

that you can pass a test. If you do, the house is yours. If you fail, the

will specifies that the house shall be sold, and the proceeds donated

to the old curmudgeon’s alma mater as an endowment.

The house has a walk-up attic, in which there are three plain bare

bulb light fixtures mounted to the rafters. Near the foot of the attic

stairs, there are three light switches on the wall. Each switch controls

one of the individual lights. None of the lights can be seen from the

          location of the switches.

You are permitted to make one trip upstairs to the attic. Once up

there, you must correctly match each light to the switch that controls

          it. Can you do it?

A number of folks insisted upon adding factors that enabled them

to solve this, such as using a confederate or other aids. The solution

          is quite simple:

There are three lights, each controlled by a separate individual

switch. The important clue is that the lights are three simple, bare
