the resources available to students choosing to complete Associate
Degrees at a community college before enrolling in a four-year
accredited institution, the Board established a deferred scholarship
program.
Using the same criteria that it has followed since 1992, the Board
will award its first two deferred scholarships in the spring of 2016.
It will be looking for two Franklin County High School seniors
who have specific plans to attend college, but who are choosing to
take advantage of CCAP, a scholarship program that makes college
available tuition-free to Franklin County graduates who attend VA
Western Community College.
Since all Virginia Community Colleges have counseling services and
articulation agreements to help students choose their community
colleges courses wisely and in ways that will lead to enrollment at a
Virginia four-year institution after graduation from the community
college, the Trust Board will begin supporting these scholarship
recipients in their junior years. The Board recognizes that this deferred
program will depend more heavily on its existing mentor program, but sees
this expansion as a way to expand its mission of helping our community by
helping others.
OTHER SUPPORT
The SML Lions Scholarship Trust is not just about money for its scholarship
recipients. The Board realizes that students entering their college or university
years have tomake large adjustments and facemany challenges. To supplement
the support that the recipients have from other sources, Board members also
maintain regular contact with each student as that student’s mentor. Those
timely words of encouragement have led to friendships that students acknowledge
as important factors in their undergraduate experiences. As the deferred scholarship
program develops, the Board anticipates that regular contact with these students
will help motivate them to complete their educational goals.
TWO CHANGED LIVES
I am truly blessed to be in your thoughts and appreciate all of your help. Regardless of
the struggles I have had to face, I continue to prevail because I know that individuals
like you believe in me. Thank you so much for your continuous help and I know that
come 2012, I will be a registered nurse thanks to all of you!
- Blanca Castaneda, 2009 scholarship recipient
The responses of graduates and the impact they are making on their communities
justifies the Scholarship Trust’s efforts to encourage community support for this
program. David Philpott is already embracing Booker T. Washington’s philosophy,
by working on ways to address transportation and environmental problems.
The Trust Board encourages everyone to become part of this effort by contacting the
SML Lions Scholarship Trust, Inc., at P.O. Box 655, Hardy VA 24101 or by calling
Mark Young, president, at 540 719-3287.
As Booker T. Washington challenged his listeners, we can to lift ourselves up by
lifting up someone else.
