Hunter Deacon is the first ever recipient of the Alex
Ernandes Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded
to a deserving student at Franklin County High
School. The scholarship was established through
a joint effort on the part of the SML Chamber of
Commerce, Franklin County High School’s ROTC
program, several area businesses, and many friends
and neighbors of the Ernandes family.
As stewards of the scholarship, Alex’s family
chooses each year’s recipient of a $1500 cash
scholarship. The criteria include academic
excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, faith in
God, service to the community, and a preference for
a candidate who plans to participate in the ROTC
program at a college or university.
Most appropriately, Hunter Deacon was a personal
friend of Alex, and served as the Cadet Commander
in his senior year at Franklin County High School.
He completed his studies at Virginia Tech this past
May, and received a commission in the United
States Army as a Second Lieutenant. Alex had also
desired to serve as an Army officer.
At his invitation, I attended his swearing in
ceremony at Virginia Tech. I was honored by the
invitation, and he told me that he was equally
honored that I accepted. Obviously, we made an
excellent choice. We are very proud of this fine
young man.
