Say what you will about James Kevin
McKelvey; the man is determined.
Jim McKelvey is running for Congress again. A strong Tea Party advocate, he first
threw his hat into the ring in 2010, in a self-financed effort to represent Virginia’s
5th Congressional District.
The seat had been held for 12 years by local favorite Virgil Goode, who then lost
the seat in an upset election to one-term challenger Tom Perriello. With Goode
declining to try to recapture his seat, the Republican Party of Virginia held a primary
election to nominate a new candidate.
McKelvey acquitted himself rather well in that race, capturing
25 percent of the vote without any support from party
leadership. He ran his campaign entirely with his own money,
and pledged to go to Washington as a citizen legislator, to “get
this country fixed”.
Robert Hurt, the eventual nominee, was the only other
candidate in the field of seven hopefuls to do better, with
approximately 50 percent of the final tally. He did so with the
support of party leaders, and the attendant financial backing.
Hurt went on to recapture the seat for the GOP.
Hurt’s tenure in Congress earned him mixed reviews, and he
has now decided for personal reasons not to seek re-election.
