If you know how to fish your lake, you can figure out how to fish a new
lake. Lets take a look at a lake that runs west to east, and the season is
spring. On your lake, you may know where the fish will be in the spring
for your best opportunity to “load” the boat. If you know why these fish
are where they are on your lake, then you can determine where they will
be on the new lake and why.
In the spring, before the spawn, the bass will be feeding up for this event.
This will occur on a point, with “lay-downs” near the coves where they will
spawn. These coves will usually feature a smooth sandy area in the rear of
the cove. There are other reasons why this is the area to find these fish:
food and temperature. The secret is in knowing how to tell one cove with
a point from another, because they all are not the same.
The difference lies mainly in the food and the water temperature. The
way the lake flows will determine the coves or arms in which you will find
fish. In this case, we are using a lake that runs from west to east. Let’s
start with the food. The bait fish or other forage will be where the water
is warmest, and so we’ll look for coves that will have the warmest water
